Yeoyu: Word Of The Year

Yeoyu (여유) is a beautiful Korean word I’ve chosen as my word of the year. There is no perfect English translation for it which feels fitting. This makes sense somehow because the most important things in life are often the hardest to explain. Yeoyu points to a way of being rather than something you do. To me, it means the way of living with ease.

Given this is the first post of 2026, it would be apt to start with a word that I am inspired to live by.

Yeoyu is inner spaciousness

It’s the feeling of having room in your life—room in your body, your mind, your schedule, and your relationships. It’s moving through the world without tightness. Without hurry. Without the sense that you are constantly behind.

And I believe this is the true art of aging well.

Aging without fighting time

So much of modern culture treats aging as a problem to solve. We’re taught to resist, hide, optimize or outrun aging. Anti-aging becomes a mission. Youth becomes a measurement.

But yeoyu offers a different path.

Yeoyu says: What if aging is not something to defeat, but something to soften into?

Aging with ease doesn’t mean giving up vitality or ambition. It means letting go of unnecessary strain. It means choosing alignment over urgency. It means allowing life to have space—so that wisdom, health and peace can actually land.

Yeoyu is not doing less—it’s living wider

A common misunderstanding is that ease comes from having nothing to do. But yeoyu isn’t about an empty calendar. It’s about a non-crowded inner life.

You can be full and still have yeoyu.
You can be busy and still have yeoyu.
You can be deeply engaged and still feel spacious.

The difference is pressure.

Yeoyu lives where pressure dissolves—where choices come from intention rather than obligation. Where you don’t overextend to prove your worth.

The connection between yeoyu and well aging

I believe we age according to how we live. It often shows on your face how your thoughts are – positive and kind thoughts over time are reflected on one’s graceful face. Unfortunately, the opposite is true too.

A life lived in constant tension ages the nervous system first. A life lived in self-abandonment ages the spirit. A life lived chasing approval ages the heart.

Yeoyu protects against all three.

When you cultivate inner spaciousness:

  • Your body recovers more easily
  • Your emotions regulate more gently
  • Your relationships feel safer and comfortable
  • Your sense of self becomes steadier over time

This is well aging—not just looking good, but feeling supported by your own life.

Yeoyu and Being Your Own Role Model

Being your own role model means you stop outsourcing permission. You stop waiting for life to slow down before you allow yourself to breathe. You choose the tone of your life from the inside out. You decide on your own pace. You lead a values-based living and not one that is based on fears.

Yeoyu is what happens when self-leadership matures.

It’s the quiet confidence that you don’t need to rush, self-trust that you are enough, leading to grace to move at your own space.

Practicing yeoyu in everyday life

Yeoyu isn’t dramatic. It’s subtle. It’s practiced in small, quiet ways:

  • Leaving margin in your schedule
  • Saying no without over-explaining
  • Eating without distraction
  • Letting silence exist in conversations
  • Allowing seasons of life to change you

These choices don’t look impressive from the outside—but they age beautifully.

The art of aging with ease

Yeoyu reminds us that the goal isn’t to stay young forever. The goal is to stay aligned as we move forward.

To age with ease is to let life have space.
To trust time.
To soften where we once braced.
To live in a way that feels breathable.

That is the art.
That is yeoyu.
